AU 20EME

I am quite the fan of the 20th district of paris. Just the area in general. The northern part of the Western group of neighborhoods is often misunderstood, but slowly appealing more and more to a trendy or entrepreneurial crowd. New places are opening, new people are heading west to hang out or find good grub.

When I first moved to Paris in 2008, I remember I didn’t venture up by Belleville often – hardly ever – no one I knew did. But it did have a certain allure to it, I was curious about it. When I lived at Lamark Caulaincourt it was considered “too far away” to some of my friends. I’d look at a metro map and I remember thinking that the area I currently live in (southern 16th) was SO FAR AWAY. Ha. Now “far away” doesn’t seem exist in Paris. It’s funny to see how much Paris has grown and changed (not negatively) over the past 6 years, and how much the city has shrunk in my eyes over the past few years.

As for the 20th, this district I just like so much; the well known Rue Denoyez was one of the main things I wanted to take my mom to see when she was in town, not to mention my favorite craft beer spot.

As a sidnote on the always evolving Paris, the amount of international cafés and store fronts that have opened recently really could be in any city in my opinion. These places (so many of which I frequent and thoroughly enjoy) don’t interest me show to close ones in town… I feel like often their identity isn’t linked to Paris, but to a niche or urban trend that hit Paris a bit en retard. It’s a mystery. The sometimes grunginess of streets off the beaten path give Paris even more personality, and make it feel real.

Where do you take your loved ones when they’re in town? I find it hard sometimes to balance between favorite spots, but also spots that aren’t so “this place could be in any city”….

I did a stroll through the 20th post, with heaps of recommendations in 2011. Looks like I’m going to have to update this post as so much has changed over the past few years.

SUMMER NIGHTS

A stroll through the annual summer fair followed by a French dinner with some of my favorite people. Not sure what kind of nights are better than these. I feel like every summer I think about previous summers. Sometimes it feels like summer is when the pages turn more than the coming of the new year.

Last summer in Paris with my Colorado girls, Rachel and Val.

Louis and I’s apartment was featured on Rue Rodier recently. Although we plan to move in the near future, I am so in love with these pictures!

I kind of wish all of these phrases were used regularly.

After seeing photos from Carin’s recent trip to Rome, I have decided I’ve got to make it there at some point within the next year.

One of my new favorite places in Paris, up in the 19th. Brunch highly suggested when the sun is out.

I’m already dreaming of Colorado for Christmas… Here’s a look at a perfect Colorado summer.

Discovered Brasserie de la Senne not too long ago. I’m itched to get myself to Brussels in the near future.

Did you see Anne’s epic Skillshare classes? On the menu: Map Making, revamping professional dox/CV & getting to know InDesign.

Know of anyone heading to Paris? I’m always keeping my Paris Guide up to date with my favorite spots in the city.

Lately I’ve been wishing there was a good place for donuts in Paris. Le sigh.

This little getaway on Haleigh’s blog in the Loire has got me craving a weekend away

I am all for Les Merveilleux de Fred! Lindsey’s top five pastry spots in Paris on WSJ.

LADIES WHO BRUNCH AT PAMELA POPO

Sometimes the cherry on top to a weekend is a girly brunch with snazzy chicks. I had been meaning to try Pamela Popo for quite some time, and the day finally came when we set a date in stone and made our way to the city’s Marais neighborhood one morning for some girly giggles and grub. First of all, Pamela Popo takes reservations, which if you’re a Paris bruncher, you probably know is a rare find in the city where brunch actually just means food served on Sunday. They were already winning in my book.

Another brownie point for Pamela Popo was the bottomless bevvies with the brunch (yes, this means you can have a coffee, then a tea, then a hot cocoa, then another hot cocoa…). On the menu are a few choices for an entrée, plat and dessert. I went with the scrambled eggs (I find that in restaurants they’re always a million times better than when I make them at home), a bagel sandwich and carrot cake. It was just divine.

The deco has a chic homey feel – weirdly retro and modern at the same time – with seating on the terrace, main level and upstairs. Highly recommended for brunch with lovely ladies. Average price for brunching in Paris, and I quite liked the atmosphere. Paris is getting a bit too trendy though, my “to try” list just keeps getting longer and longer.

FLORAL COTTAGE

When mom visited a few weeks ago we made sure to have a weekend in the countryside with my honey’s family. It was only a few days after our darling Jefferson arrived, so he tagged along to soak up the sun in Montargis.

The weekend was filled with berries from the garden and refreshing snacks like fromage blanc with mint and cucumber, tomato mozzarella salads (& other epic salads as per ususal) topped with capucines and of course some delicious wine. The flowers were in perfect bloom and allowed for infinite strolls.

I’m already dreaming of the next weekend away…

Watch a little video from this magical weekend here.
